inspiration in unlikely places
came across this little drawing on the street. 'become your dream'. unfortunately it's graffitied on the side of a port-a-potty, so the medium didn't quite fit the message.
who knew?
who knew that joyce leslie was still around? i passed one today out in queens. (unlike brooklyn, i don't tend to get lost in queens. but i did seem to encounter a crackpipe, but that's a story for another time.)
joyce takes me back to 8th grade, around 14 years old, rocking the synthetic fabrics big time. ah, joyce. the H&M of its day - total chaos once you entered the store and so much merchandise you couldn't find a damn thing in the place.
joyce was right up there with deb - remember that one? deb was homecoming/prom dress central all the year round. for whatever your formal needs, deb was right there for you.
almost as bad...
as the toilets at work are work fridges & their accompanying signs. here's this week's latest disaster:

table topic #9
in keeping with today's travel theme, here is this week's table topic. this one is from the "travel topics to go" edition:
9. Would you most like to have joined Lewis & Clark, the Apollo 11 astronauts or Christopher Columbus?
call me Sacagawea, because i have to go with Meriwether & William on this one. yes, i was just in the Pacific Northwest - true Lewis & Clark territory - and i always love it. but the pioneering spirit - not to mention the camping - leads me toward this expedition over the others.
as for Apollo 11, despite knowing that it all turns out OK for tom hanks, i think it'd be a bit too scary for me. and i'd imagine that the the whole scurvy thing would be annoying with Columbus.
incidentally - follow-up for any columbus fans out there - i'd be curious to know which ship you'd have wanted to be on...i think i'd go Santa Maria.

table topic #8
thanks to The General for contributing a fantastic summer memory of ice cream truck adventures! here is this week's table topic:
8. What's your favorite candy?
i can predict at least one of the answers coming to this question...
but for me, I don't think that I love any one candy enough to say it's my favorite. that said, when I'm in the mood for peanut butter, it's a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (Cup, never the Pieces - sorry E.T., hate those things). when I want something fruity, I go Jolly Rancher (or 'Happy Herder' as we-think-we're-so-cleverly called them in 6th grade). at the movies, I like a nice Junior Mint. on a plane ride - when I tend to consume most of my candy - well that would have to be a Whatchamacallit.
OK, Whatchamacallit it is.
"now the lawyers are involved..."
oh, no. not the bloody lawyers.
so, some of you may remember that i have a woman - let's call her "trudy" - who keeps calling my answering machine looking for "julie". (see previous post here).
julie appears to have lent trudy some art books. due to some sort of flooding trudy wants to give them back. julie not only does not return her phone calls, she seems to be ignoring trudy's emails as well. (to be fair, part of this is because i am getting these phone calls. i have no excuse, however, for the not returning the emails element of this).
as an olive branch, trudy invites her to a ladies' lunch with at the field club with trudy & patti. here is the latest in the saga - enjoy:
note, i am also sad that the "whole art project thing is on hold" and "the lawyers are involved".
my new hobby
...is creating DIY some ecards. in general, i love them. but recently, i've been collecting funny sayings or truism about my friends and creating my own. here's an example above, which is very apropos for my work week last week (and hence lack of postings). i also take requests.

table topic #7
very diverse answers to last week's table topic. in honor of the season, here is the next one:
7. What's your favorite summer memory?
this is definitely a blending of several memories. but, i remember the warm summer nights growing up. and the freedom of having no school the next day. and it being much lighter out much later. (of course, it was probably 9ish like it is now, but it seemed so late to me back then.)
and i remember my dad barbecuing (with old school charcoal) on an ancient grill a the end of the porch. and poking the embers with sticks after the fire had died down. and melting a few marshmallows here & there along the way.
and playing whiffle ball in the yard until it was too dark to see the ball anymore, when we'd switch over to catching lightning bugs (never fireflies).
and the hum of crickets (or were they cicadas) lulling me to sleep.
yes, more toilet humor
scarily bad (toiletries edition)
quick question: when did...
it become OK to wear fanny packs?
whatevs pointed it out this weekend, and i promptly spied about 5 more around town. who approved this?

scarily bad (headgear edition)
so, when searching for an appropriate 'country' visual (cowboy, boots, hat, etc.) for our latest table topic, i came across this bizarro garb - the beer box hat!
per the websites, here are some of the key benefits for those who don:
- have more fun!
- be the one everyone talks to
- make more friends
- stand out from the crowd
- make your parties more interesting
classy!
happy canada day
