faces of ground zero

on friday night, i decided to walk home from work. i stopped and use the restroom at the time warner center and came across "faces of ground zero" exhibition there--a powerful display of life-sized polaroid portraits taken soon after september 11th.

i was fortunate to have seen the original display at grand central terminal, soon after the pictures were taken, in 2002. and later at rockefeller center. and on september 11th, i tend to take out the book and take a look at the portraits.

the camera is no longer usable, but the photographer was able to revisit & photograph some of his subjects 10 years on, which he partnered with the original photographs.

i am grateful to have serendipitously happen upon it again. you can see more here.

year of...

although now gone, i was walking across the plaza across from, well The Plaza, not too long ago and came cross these menacing animal heads:

i thought to myself, "gosh, they are quite creepy. except for the dragon, he fits in with the sentiment of the piece." [note: that's art history major speak busting out right there for ya.]

it was only when i overheard someone say, "hey, which one are you again?" that i realized they are the chinese zodiac animals. and, interestingly enough, i am a dragon.

love this

as you may know, i am obsessed with hatch show prints down in nashville. on my last trip, i picked up this guy - and he's lovely. they told me it's a limited edition and only 200 were printed. even more special! have a honky-tonky christmas, indeed!

art nerd

i walked home tonight and decided that after i exited central park i'd walk straight across 72nd st. on the north side, between 2nd & 3rd, i came a cross a patch of sidewalk in which the signatures of famous women artists were inscribed:

had never passed it before and not sure why they are there, but my art history nerd self did get a little smile on my face.

who knew?

...that--25 years after its release--hall & oates were nominated for "sara smile." i always wished that had an "h," but at least i get us use our hall & oates tag again.

actually, i think this may have been a recent whatevs facebook status, so i'm guessing she knew.

ps - check out more awesome drawings from the etchasketchist on flickr.

goodbye, old friend

not that i'm tracking any YoNYCs (seeing how it's the "year of the upgrade" and not the "year of NYC"), but i did hit up the guggenhiem to see the kandinsky retrospective one last time.

and to say adieu to composition viii, my favorite painting. in the world. ever. farewell, my friend. until we meet again...

my new obsession

is poladroid - a program that takes any picture and converts it into an old-school polaroid, complete with the white border, darkened edges, and blurred, sepia tones. the camera also ejects the picture and you can not only watch it develop, but shake it to develop faster.

here are more samples - seriously, i can't stop!

you can download poladroid here.
